Yes I’m still here.

2009 June 3

Time is going by so fast! I wanted to let everyone know that I’m still here. So many things have been happening, back to school night, class field trip to the Irvine Art Center, creating the invitaions for Renee’s Bridal Shower, planning Tiffany’s Baby Shower, and planning Trenton’s birthday party. I have been too busy to add new pictures to the Photo Gallery or to add new entries to this neglected blog. Once I get caught up then there will be a fury of pictures and posts!

In the meantime, check out the invitaions for Tiffany’s Baby Shower.

Earth Week.. err Day. Happy Friday!

2009 April 24
by Brianna

Wednesday was Earth Day! I hope you all enjoyed the week of tips. Let’s see how much you’ve learned all week. Enjoy these fun quizzes about our little ol’ Earth.

Geo-Quizzes

Friday, Don’t just think about it, do it!!

Get out and plant a tree in your yard. Add a recycle can next to your trash can. Check your house for leaky faucets. Turn off the lights. All these little changes won’t make the Earth magically perfect all of the sudden, but every little bit helps.

Earth Week.. err Day. Energy Efficiency!

Wednesday was Earth Day so every day this week I will be giving a few environmental tips for you. :-) There are many things you can do to help the environment. Something as simple as turning off excess lights around the house, unplugging appliances not in use, or turning the computer off instead of stand by or hibernate modes.

Thursday, Energy Efficiency!!

Did you know that almost 50% of the energy in the US comes from coal?

Saving energy is as easy as turning off a switch. Here are a few simple things you can do at home:

  1. Run your dishwasher only when it’s full and turn off the drying setting on it. The dishes will dry on their own without the heat and energy.
  2. Adjust the thermostat. Don’t overheat or overcool rooms. Wear a sweater when it’s cold or shorts when it’s warm. Better yet, use a fan instead of the A/C! It’s quieter and uses less electricity.
  3. Don’t stare at the inside of the fridge deciding what you want. Shut that door! You’re wasting electricity by cooling the kitchen. Take a picture of the open fridge and close the door!
  4. The TV is not a night light. Turn it off at night!
  5. Lights out! Turn off those lights if you aren’t in the room. Even if “I’m coming right back” or “The cat wants the light on”. If you’re not in there, turn it off!

Is your home energy efficient? Take this quiz and find out!

Earth Week.. err Day. Reduce, Re-use, Recycle.

2009 April 21
by Brianna

This Wednesday is Earth Day so every day this week I will be giving a few environmental tips for you. :-) There are many things you can do to help the environment. Something as simple as saving your soda cans and taking them to the local recycling center every other week. You could even get a bit of money for them!

Tuesday, Reduce, Re-use, Recycle!!

Anything you throw away will end up in a landfill. There have been many advancments in the last few decades regarding trash disposal.

Reduce. Here are a few simple things you can do at home:

  1. Buy less. We have grown accustommed to having more than we know what to do with. Once a toy gets boring we want a new one. We have so much “stuff” and not enough space for it. Only buy what you need. Also, when you’re done with something, pass it along to another person who can put it to good use.
  2. Avoid single-serve containers whenever possible. Buy in bulk in large containers and divide it into smaller single-serve washable containers. This also goes for soda, yogurt, chips, cookies, etc.
  3. Cancel your unwanted junk mail. Did you know you can all toll-free numbers in catalogs and credit card applications and ask to be removed from their mailing lists? You’ll get less junk mail to go through and reduce paper waste.

Re-use. Here are a few simple things you can do at home:

  1. Donate the stuff you don’t use anymore instead of throwing it away. Clothes, appliances, furniture, etc. Keep a large bag or box handy to put all this stuff in (It’s just as easy to throw it away as to put it in a box). Only donate clean clothes with no holes, appliances that work, or furniture that can be used again. Find your local Good Will store or Salvation Army.
  2. Hold a yard sale. If you clean out a room or your garage, you don’t have to throw useful stuff away if you don’t want it anymore. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. You can get rid of your old stuff, let someone else use it and get enjoyment out of it, and make money in the process!

Recycle. Here are a few simple things you can do at home:

  1. Almost anything can be recycled into something else.
  2. Here are some items that can be easily recycled: Aluminum Cans, Water Bottles, Newspaper, Cardboard, Magazines, Oil, Glass, etc.
  3. Find your local recyling center.

Earth Week.. err Day. Be Water Wise!

2009 April 20
by Brianna

This Wednesday is Earth Day so every day this week I will be giving a few environmental tips for you. :-) There are many things you can do to help the environment. Something as simple as reusing your water bottle instead of opening a new one each time you’re thirsty can reduce your waste. Imagine if you also recycled that water bottle!

Monday, Be Water Wise!!

Even though the Earth is mostly water, only 3% of it is fresh water and even less than that is suitable for drinking. Our water reserves are being depleted more and more each day.

Saving water is as easy as turning off a faucet. Here are a few simple things you can do at home:

  1. Don’t keep the water running while you’re brushing your teeth.  You can save 3 gallans per day!
  2. Take shorter showers. Shortening your showers by one or two minutes can save 5 gallans per day!
  3. Help your mom or dad fix the dripping faucet. A leaky faucet can waste 20 gallons of water per day!
  4. Help your dad install a water-saving shower head. In addition to the water it saves, it also saves the fuel that would have been used to heat up the extra hot water. And that reduces pollution.
  5. Wash only full loads of laundry. You don’t have to do laundry as often and you can save 15-50 gallans per load!
  6. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks. You can save 150 gallans each time!

Happy Easter! Photos are up!

2009 April 16

Happy Easter! He is risen! He is risen indeed!

I hope everyone had a great Easter holiday. Ours wasn’t too busy and kind of laid back. We started off the season with dying Easter eggs. Well actually, we waited for Hannah to dye the eggs and flew a kite while we waited! It was very windy and the kite flew very high.

Egg dying was fun. There were plenty of eggs! Almost 4-dozen! All of them turned out beautiful but the best ones were the super bright blue one, the pacman crew, and the colorful striped one.

On Easter Sunday we visited each of our parents, ate a lot of turkey and the edible arrangement, and then went home and played Call of Duty. A very fun day!

You can see photos of our Easter in the Gallery.

New Pictures! Family Jam, April 4, 2009

2009 April 15

Family Jam was a lot of fun! Trenton really enjoyed getting his face painted, getting balloon bunny ears and a balloon sword, and the Easter egg hunt. There were so many activities. This is a great fun atmosphere that the church provides. It’s a great way to invite people in the community, friends, neighbors, classmates, etc. to see how much fun church can be.

Jacob, Elizabeth, and Lucas all had a great time! They were all involved in either helping or hunting for eggs. After the egg hunts they helped out the volunteers with picking up the discarded opened eggs and Lizzy was rewarded with stickers galore!

You can see all my pictures from Family Jam in the Photo Gallery.

The sun was shining and the breeze kept us cool. All the students contributed to the feast. And boy, what a feast it was! There was fried chicken, pizza, salad, roasted chicken, fruit, cookies and cupcakes. Everyone had a blast. It was a great reward.

All the pictures are up in the Photo Gallery.
