Track Santa with Norad

The house is decorated, presents are wrapped, Christmas cards are on their way to their respective houses, it’s time for the holiday to begin.

Christmas Eve is tomorrow, and that means Santa will be visiting us. Every year we track Santa with NORAD. Yes, the North American Aerospace Defense Command takes it seriously when foreign flights enter our airspace. Even Santa Clause.

This will be the 50th year that NORAD has been tracking Santa’s flight. It actually started in 1955 when a Colorado Springs-based Sears ran an advertisement with a special telephone number for children to call Santa. This number just happened to be the hotline for the Director of Operations at the Continental Air Defence (CONAD, NORAD’s predecessor). Colonel Harry Shoup took the first Santa call on Christmas Eve of 1955 from a six-year old boy who began reciting his Christmas list. Shoup didn’t find the call funny, but after asking the mother of the second caller what was happening, then realizing the mistake that occurred, he instructed his staff to give Santa’s position to any child who called in.

I hope Santa brings us everything we want this year. Have fun tracking him and have a very Merry Christmas!
