Earth Week.. err Day. Energy Efficiency!

April 23, 2009

Wednesday was Earth Day so every day this week I will be giving a few environmental tips for you. 🙂 There are many things you can do to help the environment. Something as simple as turning off excess lights around the house, unplugging appliances not in use, or turning the computer off instead of stand by or hibernate modes.

Thursday, Energy Efficiency!!

Did you know that almost 50% of the energy in the US comes from coal?

Saving energy is as easy as turning off a switch. Here are a few simple things you can do at home:

  1. Run your dishwasher only when it’s full and turn off the drying setting on it. The dishes will dry on their own without the heat and energy.
  2. Adjust the thermostat. Don’t overheat or overcool rooms. Wear a sweater when it’s cold or shorts when it’s warm. Better yet, use a fan instead of the A/C! It’s quieter and uses less electricity.
  3. Don’t stare at the inside of the fridge deciding what you want. Shut that door! You’re wasting electricity by cooling the kitchen. Take a picture of the open fridge and close the door!
  4. The TV is not a night light. Turn it off at night!
  5. Lights out! Turn off those lights if you aren’t in the room. Even if “I’m coming right back” or “The cat wants the light on”. If you’re not in there, turn it off!

Is your home energy efficient? Take this quiz and find out!

Two quick points on this the most blessed of all weeks…

First, hibernation is the same as completely off when it comes to power usage 🙂

Second, what’s wrong with half our electricity coming from coal? It’s cheap and abundant! 27% is right here in the U.S., and at current production levels we have enough to last us for another two or three hundred years.
